Silence and stillness does have a magic to it. It doesn’t matter where you find it — in your home, your workplace or your classroom. However, in our fast-paced world it is getting harder and harder to find.
In this book, Maggie Dent explores the cognitive and emotional benefits of silence and stillness, demonstrating how crucial it is for children as well as adults, and details methods for creating it in your home or classroom. This 2017 updates Maggie’s original work to incorporate information on mindfulness and supporting children with self-regulation.
A word from Maggie on this book
Since I first put pen to paper with this book – my first – I have been blessed with encouragement and support from classrooms and homes. For this I am very grateful. Many teachers wrote and said I had given them permission to come out of the closet! Unfortunately our curriculums have become even more crowded and students even more pressured to be tested more often. There is a new sense of urgency as our children are struggling with an even busier world than when I first published this book. I never even had the internet or a mobile phone back in 2003!
We must slow down our children’s worlds or they will continue to become sicker, sadder, fatter and more disconnected than they are already. Let’s slow down childhood, and let kids be kids. They know the value of stillness, calmness and quiet and that it happens when they have the space to listen to their inner wisdom.
“Your book, Saving Our Children From Our Chaotic World: Teaching children the magic of silence and stillness, has been a complete inspiration throughout my work, studies and life in general during the past decade. I can only begin to thank you for the profoundly positive impact your ideas and generosity of spirit have had on my professional practise, and consequently on the experiences of my pupils and colleagues.”

Maggie’s advice is so real. It makes so much sense to me as a Mum of three kids under three. Chaos is sometimes inevitable but Maggie’s strategies for finding our calm makes such a huge difference in our lives.
